If you live or work in Medway, it’s time to plan ahead, several key roads across Chatham, Gillingham, Strood and Rochester are due for resurfacing and maintenance this August 2025.
These short-term closures could cause significant delays, especially for early-morning commuters, tradesmen on tight schedules, and local businesses that rely on reliable vehicle access.
To help you stay one step ahead, we’ve rounded up seven essential roadworks and closures happening in Medway this month, complete with dates, locations, and what you can do to avoid disruption.
1. Gundulph Road, Chatham – 1 August (1 day)
Kicking off the month is a one-day resurfacing project on Gundulph Road, a key residential link in central Chatham. This short closure is scheduled for Thursday, 1 August, with access restrictions expected from early morning through to evening.
Who’s affected?
Residents, school traffic, and workers heading into central Chatham or using side roads off New Road will need to plan detours.
Avoid entering central Chatham via the A231 during work hours and allow extra time for diversions via Luton Road or Maidstone Road.
2. Shipwrights Avenue, Chatham – 4–5 August (2 days)
On Sunday and Monday (4–5 August), Shipwrights Avenuewill undergo a two-day resurfacing operation. This route serves several residential estates and is a connector to the busy Princes Avenue.
Impact:
Closures may affect access to nearby schools and public transport routes. Expect partial traffic control and possible diversions in place for buses and local service vehicles.
Expect temporary access restrictions, road planing, and surfacing equipment operating between 7am–5pm.
3. Chapel Road, Isle of Grain – 6–7 August (2 days)
Chapel Roadis one of the few routes providing access across the Grain Peninsula, making this 6–7 Augustclosure one to watch for those living or working in this coastal part of Medway.
Who should pay attention?
Freight, delivery vehicles, and drivers heading to Thamesport or industrial estates in Isle of Grain.
Detours via Stoke Road or Cooling Street may be required.

4. Courteney Road, Gillingham – 8 August (night works)
Courteney Road, a key road within Gillingham’s industrial estates, will be closed overnight on Thursday, 8 August, for essential resurfacing.
Impact:
While timed to minimise daytime disruption, night-time works could affect early-morning delivery drivers, couriers, and fleet operatorspreparing vans or Luton vehicles for the next day.
Recommendation:
Businesses in the area should reschedule heavy deliveries or prepare vehicle movements before 6pm.
5. Dux Court Roundabout – 11–13 August (2 nights)
Located near the junction of Four Elms Hill and A2, the Dux Court Roundaboutwill be resurfaced over two nights starting Sunday, 11 Augustthrough Tuesday, 13 August.
High-impact zone:
This busy intersection handles thousands of vehicles daily between Strood, Hoo, and Wainscott. Expect slowdowns the following mornings due to leftover lane closures or gravel.
Advice:
Avoid the area entirely during night hours and use the A289or Frindsbury Hillas alternatives.
6. Union Street, Chatham – 13–15 August (2 nights)
This central Chatham route will see closures on Tuesday and Wednesday nights (13–15 August), affecting Union Street, a major corridor between Chatham station, the Pentagon Centre, and surrounding shops.
Who it affects:
Evening commuters, late-shift workers, and delivery services around the town centre.
Expect:
Controlled traffic access, night resurfacing, and temporary parking restrictions.
Note:If you park overnight in the area, double-check signage for towing risks or no-parking zones during work.
- Four Elms Hill (Eastbound), Rochester – 19 August (1 night)
On Monday, 19 August, Four Elms Hilleastbound (heading toward Wainscott and Hoo) will be closed overnight for final resurfacing work. Though brief, this closure hits one of Medway’s key commuter routes.
Best detour:
Use Frindsbury Hill, Hollywood Lane, or reroute through A289 Berengrave Laneto avoid the eastbound pinch point.
Van drivers & tradesmen:
