How Much Can You Fit in To a Hire Van?

At Hire2You, one of the questions we’re asked most often when taking bookings is: ‘Will this actually fit in the van’  Whether your moving house, taking stock, or planning a big DIY move. It can be tricky to gauge what van you should go for, especially if you’re looking to budget.

The good news is, our fleet has you covered from short wheel bases all the way through to Luton’s and in this guide, we will walk you through what van sized will suit your needs.

Short Wheelbase Vans (Peugeot Expert & Vauxhall Vivaro)

Short Wheelbase vans such as the Peugot expert and Vauxhall Vivaro are compact, easy to drive, and great if you don’t need huge capacity.

Load space (average):

  • Around 2.8 metres in length

  •  1.8 metres in width

  • Payload up to 1,000kg

What fits inside:

  • A couple of motorbikes or scooters

  • 8–10 medium moving boxes + a few small bits of furniture

  • Standard trade tools and materials for electricians, plumbers, or decorators

These vans are best for small moves, trade work, or anyone nervous about driving a bigger van.

Long Wheelbase Vans (Peugeot Boxer, Citroen Relay)

When a short wheelbase doesn’t quite cover your needs a long wheelbase van can be the perfect middle ground for someone that needs more size than a short wheelbase, but doesn’t quite need the colossal size of a Luton. Starting at £69 per day, Our Peugeot Boxers and Citroen Relays can cover just about any of your moving needs.

Load space (average):

  • Around 3.5 metres in length

  • 1.8 metres of width

  • Payload up to 1,400kg

What fits inside:

  • The contents of a 1–2 bedroom flat (sofa, bed, appliances, boxes)

  • Around 3–4 pallets of stock

  • Large garden equipment, building materials, or trade tools

Best for: Moving house, delivering bulky items, or heavy trade jobs.

Luton Vans

If you’re moving house or transporting awkward, heavy furniture, a Luton van is your best friend. At Hire2You we have two options, your standard tail lift and the lowloader which as the name implies is lower to the floor, so you can take one small step to get in the back.

The box shape makes packing simple, and the tail lift or lowloader variant saves your back when loading.

Load space (average):

  • Around 4.1 metres in length

  • 2.15 metres Width

  • Payload up to 2,000kg (tail lift capacity usually 500kg)

What fits inside:

  • The contents of a full 2–3 bedroom house

  • Tall wardrobes, white goods, and stackable moving boxes

  • Office relocations with desks, chairs, and filing cabinets

Best for: House moves, bulky furniture, and fragile items that need to stay dry and secure.

Still Not Sure Which Van You Need?

Here’s a quick recap:

  • Short Wheelbase: Small jobs, deliveries, or trades.

  • Long Wheelbase: Bigger loads, flat moves, or multiple pallets.
